In my country, we know this ingredient as luncheon meat. But in Okinawa, it is known as spam due to its American influences. Regardless of the name, I relish biting into it with top-notch Japanese rice, nori and eggs.
What is the difference between spam onigiri and spam musubi?
Because over here in L.A., people would call that a Spam Musubi
reply
I think the correct term is spam musubi since it’s rectangular in shape.
Onigiri (triangle) vs. Musubi (rectangle)
I erroneously called it an onigiri because I thought Stackers wouldn’t be familiar with musubi. My bad!
reply
Oh, nice. I actually didn't know the difference; good to know!
reply
Hohohoho …. I just had 2 umeboshi onigiri for dinner, today. Haven’t had a musubi in a while, though. It seems that the triangular form is easier to make with hands.
reply
Kinda like Korea's 삼각김밥. Triangular gimbab, literaly. Seems like onigir is not fully wrapped in seaweed though.
reply
I would love to try that. Korean seaweed is the best! My children actually eat it every day with their rice
reply
Another good one with rice is Gohan Des-yo. Nice savory taste and high in iodine.
reply
Never tried that.

I always thought spam was too salty. Is it good in onigiri?
reply
I think so. The rice kinda ‘neutralises’ the saltiness of the spam. That was the best dish I tucked into in Okinawa - even more memorable than Okinawa soba
reply
I am going to have to try it at home. I will just not add salt to the rice when I make onigiri. I have always been a fan of the tuna one.
reply
Tuna? Is that canned tuna or fresh tuna? I personally like katsuobushi in the onigiri.
reply
Whichever the one is from 7-11. Im pretty sure they use canned tuna, but it is very good.
reply
I think I have had that one, too. I liked it also.
reply
I’ve tried it once and enjoyed it also.
reply
You have gone to Japan?
reply
Really? Okinawa soba is very tasty. I’ve had it a couple of times. I have never heard of spam onigiri, though. Is it a new thing? Is it only in the convenience stores?
reply
Lot of American troops stationed in Okinawa

This is kind of difficult to see the shape of the “rice ball”. Is it square or triangular? Looks interesting, though.
