He is quick to denigrate American cities, often those home to large immigrant populations. He does so both individually and collectively, sometimes in crude terms.

All politicians seek to appear like the every man. None of them are. They come off as fake. Trump isn't the common man but he doesn't come off as fake. He is a a NY loud mouth and doesn't try to sound like a typical politician. He uses rough language that normal people use in private conversations. He has no shame about it in an age where pretty much every is careful with speech.
This is one of his appeals to the masses. I know many that support him. Most don't think he's perfect. They don't like some of the stuff he says. But he's more authentic to them than the typical politician that sounds nicer. People are sinical about politics. The slime balls have done this to themselves.
Its fun to watch. Its fun to watch someone talk the way he talks to the elites. Fun to watch how triggered they get by him.

For all the reasons you mention here, I also have a soft corner for him. You're right that people like him for he seems more original.

Donald Trump is the same person he was in 1987.
Watch clips and interviews from 1980s, 90s, 2000s, etc.
Watch clips of the Apprentice.
He is the same guy except age and a different wife.
