This is why AOC’s pronoun purging matters: it’s an unspoken admission that there are two Americas. There’s the America of performative virtue, inhabited by the credentialled classes, where certain rituals have become de rigueur, chief among them the declaration of one’s pronouns. Pronoun posting serves no practical purpose. Everyone knows AOC is ‘she’, just as they know Joe Biden is ‘he’ – yes, even this 81-year-old male staple of the establishment has felt compelled to state his pronouns in the fashion of the post-class high-minded millennials who have lately conquered his party. No, the purpose of stating pronouns isn’t to provide information but to profess loyalty. Loyalty to the credo of the post-reason elites that govern our societies. It is a code of the inner sanctum, proof to your fellow travellers in the universe of staged virtue that you, too, genuflect to the religion of genderfluidity; that you, too, are good.

💯

I remember when all this stuff was starting, a relative told me about how great he thought it was that his work meetings were now starting with everyone declaring their pronouns.

I have no animus towards the pronoun people, but I am a cold economist at heart, so what struck me was how enormous the collective time drain would be if every meeting had to start with such declarations.

one of my best friends growing up later came out as transgender...
and she never 'says' her pronouns. she's just a she and its cool nobody cares

there are transgender people, and then there are the politicians. they are not the same.

best i can tell, transgender people and their identities have existed for thousands of years. it is not a recent political development, but some kind of medical condition.

I suspect that most gender dysphoric people just want to be left alone to live their life without discrimination, and don't appreciate being used as a political football.

I do think, however, that transgenderism has become a fad and that the current rates of "non-binary" self-identification are way above historical rates. I also suspect that it's the ones who are doing this as part of a fad that are the loudest about pronouns.

reply

it's interesting and i don't know.
what you said though is probably right.

people like my friend 'came out' before most people had ever heard of pronouns etc and those most deeply motivated by who they are, are the most quiet about it.
+1 we need to find common ground

reply

I don’t this idea that transgender people need to be quiet about who they are to be valid in their identity is true. Just as there are people who are loud sports fans, there are people who engage more quietly. They’re all sports fans.

I do think this sentiment about AOC is important though, as it speaks to how inauthentic left politicians are. The pronouns cater to a particular group she wants to align with, and when this no longer serves her she can remove them as she pleases. This identity swapping is something that legitimate members of a group cannot do. One cannot remove their queerness, just as one cannot make themselves queer.

I’m probably an example of think of when they imagine a leftist, though I don’t like to hard align myself with any particular political ideology and I’m constantly also looking to find common ground. I don’t find arguing over politics to be as rewarding as I once did, now I see it more as everyone vs the government as opposed to left vs right.

But I’ve always more or less believed that most people mean well. In my personal life I address people as they would like to be addressed, as to me it seems the bare minimum. We have so little control over so many things in our lives, personal identity should always be in the hands of the individual.

I’m aware many will probably disagree with some of my stances, but I hope you will take them with the light heartednedd I intended. I am always open to discussion and learning.

Be kind to people and be respectful to all.

They need to be quiet because they are annoying and shrill. Their entire identity is gender fluidity.

you sound quite triggered sir.
The mods here at Stacker News should recognize there is a fine line between lively debate... and turning this place into X/twitter which is not an improvement lol.

In my experience, the people most 'triggered' by something are the ones with the most to hide.

33 percent of antifa members identify as transgender.

These militant douche bags need a taste of their own destructive medicine. Especially in Oregon

I agree and if someone is presenting/living as a woman, I’m just going to use female pronouns, regardless of what I may know or suspect about the person.

Transgenders are mentally ill and unstable and some are very dangerous. The dangerous ones need to be eradicated

Have you had to sit through a Land Acknowledgment?

They're really shooting themselves in the foot because regular people see this for what it is: empty, performative virtue signaling, and a waste of everyone's time.

reply

Thankfully, no. They happen regularly at one of my previous universities, but didn't start until I had moved on. They sound excruciating.

reply

what the hell is a land acknowledgement?

reply

It's a little sermon about how we're all on stolen land, but we're not going to do anything crazy like give it back (that last part isn't usually said).

reply

interesting. never heard of that although i have been out of school/university for a while

i take a neutral point of view to most things like this - if it makes people feel better and it gives them closure... then ok. its not going to matter anyway

reply

The problem is I don't think Native Americans are the ones pushing for land acknowledgments. At least, not the majority of them. This is an invention of liberal academia, much like the term "Latinx" which is proven to be disliked by the average Hispanic person.

"If it makes people feel better and gives them closure"..... but who are we trying to make feel better? Liberal academics?

reply

The whole thing is just a huge waste of time. It does make some liberal academics feel good, but it’s not like they actually feel that bad about it. They mostly just want to make a big show of how virtuous they are.

The actual natives I’ve known don’t care about an acknowledgment. If anything, acknowledging it’s stolen and still not returning it is even worse.

If you’re not paying property tax, there is nothing to acknowledge

Meetings are already painful

Never forget the ones who supported or went along with this madness. 1000s of kids lives have been destroyed by unethical and predatory medical procedures which have mutilated and rendered them infertile. Many before the age they are considered mature enough to drive/smoke/drink/join the military. Children sacrificed to Baal. AOC at the very least went along with that and gave cover to it. The blood of those children is on her hands, now and for eternity. You can't wash away that sin by just updating a profile.

giving people the option with the right supervision on how to live their lives saves lives, and is in the spirit of freedom

just because you aren't transgender or don't have friends who are, doesn't mean those people don't exist. life isn't one size fits all

Now I'll never know her gender!

You should ask her every day to make sure you don’t offend her since she might have changed her gender since the last time you asked

As entertaining as this would be, I pretty much want to make life as easy as possible for those who don't give in to the whole pronoun craze.

yeah this was just meant for AOC since she used to have pronouns
