I think a decent way to do it is:
friends/trusted people only
never expose how much you have. Always downplay
focus on educating how broken the fiat system is, as opposed to how perfect BTC is
I don't mention bitcoin at all (unless someone else brings it up), but rather macro economics and the issues with the current fiat ponzi scheme. Educate on the issues, not the solution.

They are right to be suspicious about the referral link, it is indistinguishable from shilling a ponzi.
The correct answer to those concerns is: just buy bitcoin without the referral.
