Politics are messy everywhere and South Korea is the latest example. Today there was a vote on impeaching the President because of his martial law move earlier this week. While that move only lasted hours, as the opposition coalition and his ruling party bucked him and voted to overturn it, it was expected to force the President to resign or be impeached. Instead he waited a few days before apologizing on TV which did absolutely nothing to satisfy protestors so an impeachment vote was set for today.
In order to successfully impeach the president, lawmakers in the parliament needed two-thirds support, 200 out of 300 members, for the vote. The opposition is 8 votes short of that with 192 seats so they needed 8 to cross the aisle. It seemed possible to do however instead the Majority party walked out. This prevented the vote from succeeding and caused both the opposition and the protestors to cry foul.
The Majority party has since come out and said it was decided the President would step aside but we have not gotten any confirmation of this being the case from the President himself.
'The People Power Party will pursue an orderly departure of the president in order to minimize confusion for the people,' Han said.
He added that until Yoon leaves, he would be 'effectively excluded from his duties, and the prime minister will consult with the party to manage state affairs'.
With this announcement again people are crying foul and there haven't been any details released on what this would look like anyway.
The Majority party blocks the vote, promises the president will step aside, but no details or confirmation? No wonder people are furious. Feels like they’re just stalling.

At minimum the South Korean President showed very poor judgment with the martial law declaration and at very worst it was a malicious act. Either way, it he seems he’s demonstrated that he is not fit to serve so I’m surprised the impeachment failed.

So this last election was one of the closest ever and the majority party is concerned about losing the presidency due to this. I think that's why they are trying to internally handle it to create an off-ramp to keep it. I have no clue if that's legal or not but I think its more of an attempt to by time to find someone else

Yeah that would make sense.
