TLDR: I think the winners of this round will be Thunder, Rockets, Bucks, and Knicks. I picked the Warriors because I'm low on picks, but still want to win the pool, so I'm taking a risk even though I think they will lose in the first round.
The NBA Cup is shaping up to be an entertaining event during an uneventful couple of months during the NBA season. The pool run by @Undisciplined made it much more engaging, at least for me anyways. Once again, thanks for running the pool. I have some thoughts on the upcoming games and thought I'll share them. They are just my views, and my track record (number of picks I have remaining in the pool) shows that I probably don't know what I'm talking about anyways, so just see it as entertainment.
With that said, let's get right into it. I'm going to start with my predictions of this round. I think the winners for this round will be Thunder, Rockets, Bucks, and Knicks.
Although the Mavs beat the Thunder last year in the playoffs, I think the Thunder is a much better team with the addition of Hartenstein and Caruso. Last year in the playoffs, we saw that the Thunder didn't have enough size and Chet wasn't able to out rebound nor be effective against players like Gafford and Lively. Hartenstein is here to fix that now and fix that he will. Although with only 7 games played, but Hartenstein is averaging a double double, playing meaningful minutes, while causing trouble for the other teams' bigs. Caruso is Caruso, he won't show up on the boxscore, but will show up big time if you watch the game and will annoy the crap out of the other teams' scorers. With the original young core intact, hands all over the court forcing turnovers here and there, everyone running the court on offense and defense, I really don't see the Thunder losing the the Mavs. Maybe if Luka and/or Kyrie have one of those crazy can't miss nights, the Thunder is toast; but I think it's unlikely because the Thunder is just that good on defense.
I think the Rockets will beat the Warriors, but the Warriors have a chance. I don't think the Warriors have a solution for Sengun when he plays well. The Warriors are just too small and Sengun can bully them all game to lead the Rockets to victory. No, I do not think Looney can even slow down Sengun, let alone stop him. If they double, Sengun can kick it out for 3's as the Rockets have some decent shooters on the team. Green and/or VanVleet can also explode on offense and beat the Warriors that way, although I think the Warrior's wing defense is good enough to keep the Rockets' guards in check. All hope is not lost for the Warriors though, as the game on Dec. 5th shows that they can beat the Rockets even without Steph and Draymond. But beating the Rockets seem to require Sengun to have a bad game, plus Kuminga to be unstoppable. Of course, if both Steph and Draymond plays, the Warriors have more options on offense, but they have to be able to finish. I was watching last night's game of Warriors vs TWolves, and the Warriors were throwing horrible passes all game, causing many turnovers. Plus, they couldn't finish even if they had a hot chick deepthroating them (sorry for the vulgar imagery); in the game of basketball, if you can't finish (can't make baskets), you lose the game, very simple. So I think this one comes down to which version of the Warriors we get on Wednesday as well as what type of game Sengun will have. But I think the odds are in favor of the Rockets.
The Bucks are facing off against the Magic for the first time this season. There was no prior match between them this season. With Banchero still out, although the Wagner brothers are balling, especially Franz, I don't think it's enough for the Magic to beat the Bucks. Also, I really think the Bucks have turned the page and saved their season; with Giannis averaging a 30 point double double, Dame averaging 26 so far this season, and the supporting cast like Portis Jr., Lopez, Trent Jr., finally helping with the scoring, I really think they can beat the Magic. One other stat to take note is home court advantage. The Magic are 9-0 at home, but 7-9 on the road; while the Bucks are 8-4 at home and 3-7 on the road. Odds from this season favors the home team, and the Bucks will be playing at home.
The Knicks and the Hawks is a fun one. There is definitely still plenty of history left from the 2021 Knicks playoff run and Trae Young is still a big villain at MSG with his chilling daggers thrown down at MSG silencing the crowd. They played one game earlier this season on Nov. 6, where the Hawks beat the Knicks 121-116. That said, I definitely think the Knicks will beat the Hawks, because the Knicks had been playing very well lately. Brunson is great as usual. KAT seems to have found his place on the team, making good decisions, giving good offense and contributing to defense. The whole Knicks team is just playing well together having strong offense. For the Hawks to win, I think they have to really outscore the Knicks, as both teams are mediocre in terms of defense, I don't think either team will beat the other with defense. On that note, I think the Knicks offense has an edge over the Hawks, but I think it will be a close one. Either way, I expect this one to be a high scoring offensive showcase kind of game.
With the matchups laid out and my views expressed, I want to talk about my pick. I only have 4 teams available to pick from, Warriors, Thunder, Bucks, and Hawks. If I still want to win the pool, which I definitely do, I must save the team I think will win the cup and work my way backwards. If I just focus on surviving, I will run out of picks very quickly and lose due to not having picks. I believe the Thunder will win the cup, as they are just that much better than the other teams; especially with the Cavs and Celtics not in the knockout stage, the Thunder have a really good chance. That means I cannot take the Thunder this nor next round. I also think the Knicks will win the East in the semifinal round, but because I used them already in the group stage, I think the Bucks is the next best bet. That means I need to save the Bucks for the semifinal round and cannot use them this round. That leaves the Hawks and the Warriors available for me to pick this round. Out of the two matchups, I think I have a better chance with the Warriors beating the Rockets than the Hawks beating the Knicks, so I picked the Warriors this round.
If you read all the way down to here, thank you for your time reading this wall of text. Again, this is just my point of view and can be completely wrong. Do your own research.
Very good analysis. So glad to see you posting about NBA again.
I was thinking along the same lines as you in terms of picks but after seeing how the Warriors are playing recently I am concerned about their ability to beat the Rockets so I am leaning towards the Bucks in this round. That would still give me a path to take the Knicks next round assuming they get past the Hawks who are playing well lately.
I should be taking the Warriors to leave myself more options in the semis but I also need to get there. So I think I would rather take a more sure pick and then hope the cards fall the way I think they will.

Haha, did I ever stop posting about NBA? I feel that's all I ever talk about here besides writing my hiking posts every week.
The Bucks this round is a very solid pick, and I feel is the most probable win out of the 4 matchups. I would have picked them this round too if I didn't need to save them for next round. That early Knicks pick is really biting me in the ass it's not even funny. Should have had more trust in the amazing KAT.

I guess you didn't stop posting about it but are doing more frequently again now with the pool and the cup.

Yep, the pool is definitely keeping me more engaged. Me being not as busy with work also helps.

How I wish your analysis regarding Rockets x Warriors would come true. There are times when a team needs to know how to win a game, and in my opinion the Rockets fail in this when the game is extremely balanced.
reply
Teams have good games and bad games. From what I've seen this season, I think the Rockets on average should be able to beat the Warriors on average. Especially with a talented 5 like Sengun, the Warrior simply don't have a solution for him when he's cooking. The thing is, we probably agree that individual games are much more nuanced and not averages. My prediction is just based on a few limited number of games I saw so far this season of these teams, so I guess you can take it with a grain of salt. I assume you're a Rockets fan from our past conversations? Have some faith in your team, they've got something good going on at Houston.
reply
Yes, I'm a Rockets fan, as you remember. My caution may be due to the Warriors' experience in moments of greater pressure in a decisive game.
Yes, I need to believe more in the team... maybe it's a pessimistic side afraid of creating expectations 😂
reply
Curbing your expectations is a good way to protect yourself from getting disappointed by your team. But I think the trade off by doing so is the inability to fully engage and be completely invested in your team; as a result, it becomes not as satisfying when they do win.
reply
Exactly, when the team wins it is more of a feeling of relief than enjoying the victory 👍

Here’s another issue: we all have the Thunder available and are likely all saving them.
In the event that we’re right, the contest will probably come down to tiebreakers.
That means it might be worth gambling on OKC losing at some point, which is more likely than them winning and getting the tiebreaker correct.
reply
Interesting point. Curious if you're planning to base your picks going this route?
reply
I'm not sure. If I were to, then I would probably take the Bucks now.
The Knicks and Thunder are the heaviest favorites, so I'd be banking on them both winning. Then, I'd pick whichever of them is the heaviest favorite in the Semi-Finals and hope the other makes the finals.
The reason I'm torn is that I'm basically trying to pick the correct full path, or at least the most likely one available to me. The problem with the path I described is that I'm not sure I would take the Knicks over the Bucks. In that case, I should leave the Bucks for that matchup.
reply
I don't have the luxury of having the Knicks available to pick, so the decision is easier for me. Although I also think the Knicks will make it out of the east, I share your view that the Bucks do have a good chance against the Knicks. Maybe watch their next few games closely and base your picks according to their performances?
What would make it super interesting is if the Hawks beat the Knicks this round, which I think is entirely possible. It's pretty much an offensive showdown between the two, and the Hawks are never shy when it comes to making buckets.

By far the biggest wrench that could be thrown into the pool (mixed metaphor alert) is Dallas winning. We all have the Thunder available and are probably all saving them.
We also all have the Bucks available, but I don't think we're all trying to save them.
reply
Huge wrench indeed. In that case, the ones with more picks will definitely be in a much better position. This is fun. Looking forward to next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tough first half for the Raps. Offense looks good but D struggling against the Mavs.

Missing tonight's games again, at least the early ones. Just finished my little one's first ever ringette game, and wife decided we should just eat out. Little dude had a hat-trick! I'm so freaking hyped now. Need to write a parent corner to brag about it when I get home.

Wow, tonight is a night of upsets. Wizards beat the Nuggets, Pistons beat the Knicks, Heat beat the Suns, and Grizzlies beat the Celtics. Joker got 56 and still lost. The Nuggets really need to put better pieces around Joker to maximize his prime. I think he's so good that he can get Denver at least a couple more championships if they surround him with a good team, but that needs to happen sooner than later.
reply
I didn’t realize the Grizzlies beat the Celtics. Knicks didn’t have KAT.
Agree regarding Denver.
reply
It was the second night of a back to back for the Celtics, so I give them that excuse. KAT seem to have already cemented himself to be an important part of the Knicks' success, at least for now.
reply
Yes KAT is looking good with the Knicks.
What do you think of the TWolves? Seem to be playing better.
reply
I watched yesterday's TWolves vs Warriors game. Yes, TWolves definitely seem to be playing better than before. Better offense, much better defense, but still careless with the ball causing turnovers. Maybe Ant publicly calling his team out really worked. Let's see further down the season how this goes.

Is it really going to matter though. I don’t see anyone beating the Thunder in the West. They look so good and I expect they will only get better.
reply
It's still early in the season, teams can still heat up / cool down / and what not. Injuries could also happen. But with the way things are looking right now, and with Chet expected to come back later in the season, it's really hard to find a team that will beat OKC in the West in a 7 game series. Mavs might get 1 or 2 over them when Luka and/or Kyrie gets hot, but I agree with you and don't see any team beating OKC in a 7 game series.
