Hi all, long time lurker, this is my welcome post :)
I read a lot of discussion about how orange pill friends and family; spread adoption is a critical factor to promote bitcoin and accelerate its use of course.
Teaching and gifting few sats are great options but I think that injecting "moderate heavy" sats in the real word is the best way to give people the real sense of the Bitcoin revolution. In fact many try to ask business if they accept BTC too, but often they hit a wall related to fiscal or economical worries. So why don't start from the bottom and propose friends& family to accept BTC instead of fiat? There are a lot of situations where this is possible, for example these happen to me recently:
  • I had to pay back a friend for some bottle of wine he bought when visited a wine cellar
  • I had to thanks a friend that offered a yoga class to show me how to solve a posture problem
  • I had to pay my father back some of the money he had lent me because I had forgotten my wallet
  • I had to pay back a friend that payed the full dinner (because it had only a credit card and the resultant didn't allow us to split the bill and make two payments)
Simply ask if they accept the value in BTC and offer a fast tutorial on how to install and manage a wallet, with a proper focus on the seed backup. Telling them that you will obviously accept BTC for a similar issue will give them a first confidence that they can actually use them in the future.
Giving people more than few sats, often used to bootstrap a wallet, lead them to be attentive to the management of their new funds too. Because the sum is however modest and not seen as an investment, they will be inclined to try to spend them in a shop to test the system, or replay the offer to another friend. If a lot of people had $20 in sats ready to spend I think the business will be more motivated to accept them, and perhaps the egg-chicken dilemma could be solved faster.
The yoga friend after some days sent me a pic of the front door of her favourite second hand shop showing the sticker "Bitcoin accepted here". She never payed attention to it before and now said: I'm going to pay with Bitcoin today, yeah! Happily Orange pilled :)
There are a lot of services that let buy little sums, even without KYC; it is quite easy to keep a wallet for these daily situations and refill it as soon the BTC are spent. So the volatility is a not problem (for the payer, at least).
What do you think? :)
Welcome!
This is my favorite practical use of bitcoin: paying back family and friends. Trying to get friends you grab a beer with to pick up the check and then pay them in bitcoin is great.
