My surname is Heng (which means lucky in my dialect). Unfortunately, it is へん in Japanese. My wife refused to take my surname when we married haha 😂
Does that translate as “weird”?

It does. Weird, bizarre.
Chinese people or people from Chinese descent often have one Chinese character for their family name so pronounced in Japanese it can turn into something weird (pun intended).
