I still have a Gemini account for their cash back credit card, which is payable in bitcoin. I think it's 2 percent on groceries now. This morning I logged in to pay my card, but could not enter the site without filling out a substantial questionnaire. They asked stuff like my citizenship, my net worth, my crypto trading experience, whether I was employed, why I had an account (I started wondering that myself), what was the source of the funds I used on the account (gambling winnings, gifts). There was no choice of not applicable or none of the above. I had to answer each question to move on.
It was much more extensive than the typical bank or stock brokerage questions I have seen before. Since I only use it for cash back bitcoin, most of the questions didn't even apply to me.
I'm wondering if stackers have noticed these much more intensive, probing questions on other kyc exchanges?

Shotgun KYC strikes without notice.
Thanks for the heads up about Gemini.
Are you able to post the questions? Would be interesting to see how they read.

I received an email about this from Gemini, so I was expecting it, though it’s annoying

Gemini operates in Singapore, and yes I had those questions too.
The worst thing about Gemini recently is that I have to declare the source of my funds every time I receive a payment - is it from my wallet or someone else’s? I stopped using it after that
reply
I've stepped away from Gemini since their earn program went to shit

How I get 10% discount on all my groceries:
  • few years ago I onboarded a small grocery shop to accept BTC
  • now they offer me 10% discount on all shopping paid with sats, p2p / wallet to wallet
  • I can order (by phone) whatever I want, even if they normally do not sell it in their shop.
  • If I have a large order, I call (or send a chat msg) and they prepare everything for me.
  • if I want to be delivered at home, they usually send next day a guy and I pay the LN invoice to the owner. I also give to the delivery guy a nice tip in sats.
NO FIAT INVOLVED, NO BANK CARDS INVOLVED. It'a ll about how you find the right shop to onboard and help them.

Sounds practical… not
Grocery stores have razor thin margins, 2 percent or less. Clearly you are trying to run them out of business

Something is going on. I had a shitcoin past and dumped those for tax harvesting reasons and MetaMask asked the same.

I have Gemini credit card but rarely use it. I have not logged in for a long time

4% back on gas is key. Not 10% like the past. That gas ⛽️ is almost free now. We are closing in on a 10x from 15-16k!!!

Unfortunately I don't have a Gemini account yet, but with so many questions for you, maybe you should complete KYC so you can use it again, but whether entering KYC can guarantee the confidentiality of personal data, this is the problem now.
reply
For me, I'm done with KYC exchanges. It's more work and more expense,. but I prefer to avoid it. From prior experience, I really despise Gemini. They really discourage you from moving your bitcoin to your own wallet. They started questioning me, freezing my account, etc. It's not like they didn't KYC me, either.

I got hit with Gemini recently as well and the only reason I have it is because I use Brave and even though they are transitioning to self custody rewards I have not been lucky enough to be part of that yet.
Same issues with me and I got asked a lot about my employment since I had to hit the Gov't employee button. I honestly felt like when I hit that they acted like I was someone who was trying to get them in trouble like I was looking into them to announce some action or something. It sucked and I saw on Brave's community thing people complained a lot so hopefully they hurry up the self-custody rollout so I can just close that sucker down.

I got the same thing recently, I don't think River/CashApp has asked some of those but they were par for the course brokerage questions (same as a Fidelity/Robinhood/ETrade like account)

Gemini is a platform that asks for a lot of data. I used it for a short time and withdrew my Bitcoin. I discarded it when I realized that these types of things were happening, what you are talking about.

They are getting picky. Imagine if you would have answered wrong for one of the questions.
reply
Imagine that 😀

Yes, we have this in Canada as well. It’s ridiculous.

Damn! All you wanted was some bitcoin for your groceries, and they’re over here writing a Netflix docuseries about your financial life.

Kraken threw a questionnaire at me yesterday. It was apparently something required by the FCA, to determine whether I was a 'sophisticated investor' or a regular one, as that determines how much corn I'm allowed to buy. I gave it a BS answer w.r.t. my net worth and qualified as the former. But I'm really just a saver.

But they didn’t ask you what your pronouns are? I wonder if that makes it a hate crime in Canada.

Do you guys ever think about another topic? Obsession problem.

I do, thanks for asking

Have you already done KYC there? Or, it's kyc free?
I don't use Gemini. In fact I don't know if it'd work here. But all the options that we have do kyc. We don't have any option for Bitcoin card which I'm jealous of sometimes.
reply
Oh yeah. It's kyc. They gave me a problem a year or two ago, but all I use now is the credit card.
reply
Makes you wonder if the 2% is even really worth it
