Fair concern but that's likely a risk with a lot of guys. There are only a few elite QBs and then another tier of 5-7 guys that could have top 5 potential.
I do understand the argument that you always need to be trying to get a top 5 QB but I also think as we saw with the 49ers last year and the Lions this year you can get top 5 QB play from a top 10 or top 15 QB in the right system with the right pieces. I mean Goff and Darnold look like top 5 QBs this year. Who would have thought that was possible?
Shanahan trusts Purdy more than any QB he has had. I think that goes a long way. Ultimately I think they will sign him but I will lay out both cases in my post later in the week.
My biggest concern is if they sign Purdy but don't address the offensive line. We know Purdy is small ( a lot of batted down passes), has small hands so he doesn't play well in inclement weather and is limited throwing downfield. If you don't give him at least a decent OLine you are just inviting defense to stack the box, stop the run and try to force him to beat you 30 yards downfield.
If you give him the Detroit Lions OLine he going to be the most efficient QB in the league.

Oof, that's another major Carr red flag.

This is a concern for me. They don't play in bad weather often. Maybe a few times a year but bad weather is likely to occur down the stretch and in playoffs when you need your QB to be at their best. He wasn't very good in the rain against the Packers last year in the playoffs.

Fortunately, some of the top NFC teams play inside. It's basically the Packers that might be a problem.
reply
True. Fortunately only Seattle is an issue in the division. They don't have a lot of weather games but when they do Purdy is usually bad.
49ers in general play like spoiled Californians in bad weather. They all seem to suck.

I don't think you need a top 5 QB. The mistake is paying a non-elite QB as though he's elite. It just doesn't leave enough cap room to fill out the necessary support.
reply
I get this argument but didn't really want it to be the basis of this poll. The 49ers created 55M in cap space this year with a team littered with All pros and big contracts. They are among the best in the league at manipulating the cap. Of course there will be trade offs when you are paying a guy 50 plus million a year but I am not too concerned about their ability to manipulate the cap and structure the contract in a way that allows them to keep a top tier team.

It's hard for me to not interpret Purdy, through a Carr lens.
I think it's fair to both consider him a franchise QB and not pay him like an elite QB.
reply
I agree with that but if you want to keep him you have to pay him at least in the range of an elite QB. I don't think the Cowboys should have given Dak 60M but that's the market.
reply
The market adjusts though.
After Dak, Russ, Lawrence, Danny Dimes, that dipshit in Cleveland, Carr, Kyler, etc. I think teams are going to be less willing to through money at QB's.
We'll see, but if I'm SF, I'm thinking about telling Purdy that he's free to test the market and report back.
