@niftynei was gushing about Phil Haney on X, so I was curious. He's worth gushing about afaict.
Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention, but standup comedy feels like it's been in a fallow period for the last decade or so. I mostly mean the art form because standup comedy as a business seems to be booming. I want to blame podcasts for giving half-funny people enough fame to draw an audience while distracting them from greatness, or ZIRP and streaming services for creating a bounty on mediocre specials, but who knows.

I feel like a lot of comics are being shoved down our throat. Also, if you are a friend of Joe Rogan, you seem to be successful, even if you arent that good. I know influence always helps, but I feel since Joe Rogan has started his podcast, he has kind of controlled that space with his influence. I could be 100% wrong, but that is how I feel.

I think it was Chapelle that paraphrased Chris Rock's evaluation of Rogan as, "this mfer willed himself into being funny," which I heard as an insult. I've never considered Rogan very funny. He's interesting and obviously a master of doing nonjudgemental long form meandering conversations with just about anyone, and fun, but he's not that kind of gift-from-god type of funny.
afaict great standups have a kind of mental illness, a self-loathing so great that they are empty and available for empathy/observation, or something like that.

Rogan has some funny moments, but I dont feel he is very funny. You have to give him credit where it is due, his podcasts are great. But when brings the guys that are leaching off of him on his podcast, I feel it suffers a bit. Lots of Rogans friends have done a specials...and failed. When I think of great comedians, I think of Robin Williams or Chris Rock. They can make anything worth laughing about, just by the way they say or phrase something.
