Stackers, us included, really seem to like the daily discussion thread so we've been thinking about ways to enhance it. One thing we're thinking about doing is giving it a permanent url and making it easier to browse through older daily discussion threads. Any other ideas?
Instead of having a hard reset of the entire thread at X time, I would keep a single live thread always on, and make the old messages disappear one by one when they're older than 24 hours.
That way you would have a more continuous flow of messages from people all around the world.
You might want to keep a log of these old messages though for future searches, those can be created after 24 hours have passed, like a snapshot of what was there at the live one.

+1 for the messages that disappear from the daily board after 24 hours.
This is already a familiar format for people using apps like Snapchat/Instagram/Facebook.
Everyone knows things disappear after 24h, and there is always something new to see whenever you check in.

Maybe add a date filter for searching. I use the search box a lot. That would be nice. However the site is excellent as it is already!

It comes out super early for PST folk. Maybe push it back an hour or two?

I'm not sure I grasp. The Daily is currently created at 5am Central Time (which is 3am Pacific Time). Are you saying to move it to like 4am or 5am Pacific?
I was thinking of suggesting moving it the other direction, so that those in Europe (SN's second largest user base) posting even mid-morning do not end up finding their comment become memory holed in the previous day's thread (at 10am GMT).
There's always someone where this daily cut-off would occur at an inconvenient time, but if that concept of a new post each day remains, the least number of users impacted would likely occur (from personal, casual observation of comments activity on the Daily Discussion thread) by putting the cut-off at probably midnight Central Time, which is 10pm Pacific (West Coast), and 5am/6am GMT, and 10:30am/11:30am IST (India). The 5am/6am GMT is because of the Daylight Savings time adjustment. I don't remember if the Daily Discussion is occurring at a specific time UTC, or a specific time Central Time, so I might have those adjustments above for DST flipped.

Changing thread ordering to recent first by default, and adding a hot/recent/top option as preference?

Categorizing or sorting of some sort would be nice. Maybe users could self categorize upon posting?
reply
I don't think it's the functionality/idea of the thread that draws people into the daily-thread.
I think it's just friendly, casual, community building, non-bitcoin content. I think making subs dedicated to other content should be priority #1.
Economics 101 dictates that if complimentary products exist, that increases demand for the compliment. Building subs, should drive up demand for both Bitcoin and the Bitcoin content. Bring more people in. And keep people who are here, coming back.

Maybe a daily question to get it started
For example least favorite bitcoiner?

I see a fair number of Posts (Discussion Posts) that are along the lines of "random thoughts", sometimes bitcoin related, sometimes not. A few of them get useful replies, many get no replies or nothing I consider substantive.
Many would be better suited as a comment in the Daily Discussion thread rather than being done as a Discussion Post of its own.
The thing is, more than just on a rare occasion, one of these simple comments posted on Daily Discussion does end up spurring a decent discussion ... where in hindsight it might have been better if it was a post of its own. But a person won't necessarily know this would be a good discussion until after they've posted the comment and the discussion then occurred.
So, ... my thought on this is ... how about making it a simple step for the user to convert a comment (of their own) that occurred in the Daily Discussion such that it moves the comment and replies below (i.e., the entire discussion) into its own Discussion Post. A title then needs to be composed by the SN user but the Item record storage already supports a Title, so I think this is a feature that probably could be added without doing all that much design and dev work.
So, ... just thought I'ld pass this suggestion along.

That would be neat.
We'd need some kind of button like 'turn this into a post' and then technically it's a little tricky because posts are distinguished from comments in that they have a "parent."
Good suggestion. I'll think on it more.

I thought something with a sat incentive would be cool.
So picture a big 50/50 draw that resets every 24 hours or maybe every 144 blocks. Anyone could enter by wagering as many sats as they want (I suppose you could cap it) and 1 sat would equal 1 entry. The winner would get 50% and SN gets the other 50 to the big pool to distribute or whatever.
The daily 50/50 draw would increase user retention, and help fund the site. Even lurkers might be more inclined to spend sats. You could have a small icon for the 50/50 draw somewhere in a corner of the site, and make it as easy as tipping someone sats to enter.
And the daily discussion board, you could do something like, every sat received for your comment grants you 2 tickets to the 50/50 draw.
And if you are the winner, you could get a cool icon by your username and a cool notification showing that you won the daily draw.
Down the road, you could even donate half the proceeds to good causes, like Hodlnaut for example.
I understand some people are against gambling, but just throwing the idea out there! 🤠

I Like the one url so you don’t have to scroll. Also maybe we can highlight the comment/post that got the most sats in the previous 24 hours. Since this is stacker news let’s see what the community tipped the most and commented on

So when I open https://stacker.news/ , the first thing I do is check the notifications and read them if any, then come back by hitting the lightning logo.
Then I'm in this mode where I'm rapidly scanning to see whether I should open something.
That scanning mode is me basically going top down the page reading post titles. 90% of the time I don't look at anything but the title to determine whether or not I want to open something.
My 2c: ideally there would be some indicator on that title-level view about the amount of activity inside the daily thread. Something subtle of course - the red indicator is good. Doesn't even have to be color. Could just be text like the total number of sats that been tipped inside.
Pretty sure I'll need some kind of indicator on that level to help me filter. Like, it's not like I'm gonna go open it every day to see what's going on inside.
If, however, you are trying to make it so rewarding in there that people start going daily out of habit, I can certainly mull that one over...

A nice low hanging fruit would be to make the thread sticky so it’s always on the top of the main page. This would encourage even more discussion.
I also like the idea of a rolling 24 hr page so it’s the same experience for everyone in the world. Bitcoin is global.
Lastly, I like the idea of being able to sort through top posts from a particular time range and btc price, so we can build long term discussion. But maybe that is better for the “sub” model.

I usually check SN when I sit at the computer in the morning (UK time). My biggest issue with daily discussion is at that time it's still the previous day's thread. This limits the GMs.

Have you considered a Wild West re-brand?
What if it was called the Stacker News Saloon and the pin icon was replaced by a cowboy hat?

It should be adapted to Bitcoin Standard Time (UTC). The only true time synced with bitcoiners. Will be nice to include the Bitcoin block height when is posted.
