Sounds like it was just the excuse he was looking for to leave the game.

yeah he had an unusually bad first day.

the rule is pretty stupid.  at the same time it's a little weird to show up to any party/gathering against dress code standards.  no one else could get away with this.

Haven't followed actual games, but if it's true, good strategic move from him! :)

Magnus Carlsen quits FIDE tournament after being told to change jeans

I read in a local newspaper earlier today that Carlsen didn’t start the tournament well and had only a tiny small chance to win. Not sure if this story is true, but if true, then maybe good for him 🤣
