Nice write up. What novel were you reading? I was around for New York City in the 1970s. There were lots of people walking the streets, selling books on sidewalks, and busking. Busking is the English word for singing and playing instruments for money on street corners.
Thanks, @siggy47! It is a novel written in Albanian (not translated into English, I guess), titled: The Sinless.
I should have mentioned that "a part of the story took place in New York". The protagonist of the novel studied in New York in the 1970s and then returned to Albania. And the rest of the story takes place in Tirana.
