Sometimes being a scientist is a lot like being a detective. Some strange discovery in nature will seem impossible at first, but the slow work of unraveling how that “impossibility” came to be eventually reveals a deeper understanding of the universe. And now, according to NASA, there’s a new cosmic “crime scene” lying at the heart of NGC 5084—a lens-shaped galaxy in the constellation Virgo some 80 million light-years from Earth.
