Generally, when a paper is retracted for being invalid, publishers issue an updated version of its PDF with clear indications that the research it contains should no longer be considered valid.
Yeah, not sure about the "clear" indications. Many publishers do the bare minimum when dealing with retracted papers. Things have changed a bit since RetractionWatch started busting their asses, but let's not paint the publishers as doing good.
