I was just re-reading The Genesis Book last night. Nick Szabo talks about Selgin's theories on free banking. He saw it as an improvement over a central bank, but pointed out the problem that trusted third parties (TTP) still exist. Ultimately he predicted once there was a failure of trust, the system would return to one controlled by a central bank.
Hal Finney makes a reference to Selgin and free banking in one of his comments on bitcoin talk
