pull down to refresh

After a miserable 6-11 season, which ended with the 49ers going 1-7 in the last 8 games, the 49ers are making moves to avoid a repeat in 2025.
  • They fired their Special Teams coordinator Brian Schneider
  • They relieved Defensive Coordinator Nick Sorenson of his coordinator duties
  • They hired Klay Kubiak as Offensive Coordinator (though Shanahan did confirm he would be final say on play calls)
  • They signaled that Trent Williams will likely be back
  • They indicated they would like to get the Purdy extension done prior to OTAs so the whole team can be present.
Now that the housekeeping is done it is time to remodel.
First order of business hire a DC and Special Teams Coordinator. Ultimately, I think Sorenson will get shifted over to ST when they bring in a new DC but it remains to be seen. I wouldn't mind that move. The players like him. I think he can handle ST. There are a lot of good potential DC candidates out there. I would like Robert Saleh to come back but he will be up for a couple NFL head coaching jobs and probably some college ones as well so that might be unlikely. As long as they bring in someone who has NFL experience as a DC, has run a similar scheme and shown competence in making adjustments, I will be cool with whoever they bring in.
In terms of roster there is a lot to do but they have salary cap space and 11 draft picks. On the offensive side of the ball they need to:
  • Upgrade the Offensive Line. Especially LG and C but they can improve at RT as well. Burford performed well at LG when Banks went out so they might have the LG answer in house, especially if Trent is healthy. Whoever plays beside Trent usually looks good. This draft is not very good for C so I hope they can find one in free agency to at least come in to compete. That leaves RT which is not the biggest need but should be the highest priority come draft time as you can draft a T to play RT next year and take over for Trent at LT once he hangs up his cleats.
  • TE depth. Kittle is still playing at an all pro level but TE2 and TE3 were awful this year. They definitely need to draft a big body, blocking TE sometime between rounds 4 and 7.
On the defensive side of the ball they need to:
  • shore up Edge opposite Bosa. They have never found that guy to be the staple to play opposite Bosa. I expect they will try to get one within the first three rounds.
  • bolster the DLine with some run stuffers. DLine will be a big priority in this draft. They need a run stuffer. They got some decent work out of Malik Collins and Evan Anderson this year but they need that interior stud. I expect they will address DT in both the draft and free agency.
  • bring back Dre Greenlaw. Easier said than done. He is a free agent and will have many suitors. Hopefully they can retain him. If not, Dee Winters can slide in nicely beside Fred Warner but they will definitely need to get a LB in the draft or free agency for depth and three linebacker sets.
  • bring back Talanoa Hufunga. Less easier said than done but still easier said than done. He is a free agent but due to injury history he might not get the kind of offers Greenlaw will. If he doesn't return. They need to draft or sign a starting safety. Mustapha had a great rookie season and Brown is serviceable as a backup but they will need another good starting level safety.
  • 49ers are set a corner for the next 4 years with Lenore and Green but they need more than 2 corners. With Ward likely leaving in free agency and Yiadom also a free agent they have some work to do depth wise here. They should bring Yiadom back. He was a good depth guy but they need to address this position in both the draft and free agency. They are a major injury to Lenore or Green away from this room looking very ugly.
Lots of work left to do but as I mentioned salary cap space, draft capital, hopefully some new coaches that put their players in positions to succeed and add in the easiest schedule in the NFL next year (going from hardest to easiest) and you have a recipe for a big bounce back year.
Sats for all, GR
Great analysis. As the team stands right now do you have them over or under 10 wins for the 2025 season?

Thanks Blok. I will be keeping one eye on my 49ers offseason moves and the other the Bills.
Let's go Buffalo.

From the outside looking in I think have a much longer off-season is going to be huge for yall to heal up. I look at it from a baseball perspective of the Astros made all of the deep runs over and over and more and more guys started to get hurt. We got bounced early last year and now guys can finally rest and recover.
I like the Kubiak move but I have always like the family. They seem to always deliver on the offensive side of things.
I think drafting a RB will also be huge for yall. Even if CMC comes back 110% healthy having a solid guy to spell him will be critical. Since really good RB can be nabbed in the 3 or 4 round even you can grab one later on and address an OL or DT position like you discussed. A pretty solid take in the 2nd round if he falls that far for yall would be Shemar Stewart DT/DE from Texas A&M. He was easily our second-best D lineman and the top one Nic Scourton will likely go in the first towards the middle/end.

I do think they will draft a RB but hopefully in the later rounds. They have Mason, Mitchell and Guerrendo to back up CMC. Unfortunately, all 4 of them got hurt a different points this year.
I think they will go OLine in the first round if Banks or Campbell are available. The draft is pretty deep with Edges so I don't think they will go Edge first round unless one of the top 3 guys falls to them. DT is also a good option for the first round. If there are a few guys at positions of need I could see them trading back a few spots to get more draft capital and then maybe using it to trade up later in the draft.

Super Bowl hangover is a heck of a drug

Seems to be the case. First mistake was firing Wilkes after the Super Bowl when every other DC candidate was already hired. They should have just kept him for this season.
Then all the contract bullshit and injuries. Rookie gets shot. Guys have family tragedies. It truly was a if it can go wrong it will go wrong kind of season but 2025 can't be worse. I guess technically it could but likely won't.

This is great analysis. Why not analyse all the losers from NFL like this.
reply
I don't know the other losers as well as my team and I am not that interested in them. But could do a post with each team not in the playoffs and their biggest need of the offseason.
reply
Yes, you should attempt 2 or 3 teams weekly, you'll cover up all of them within two months then. It'd be a great read and my guess is that we can attract outside folks for such posts.

If we did one a week it would be 32 weeks and take us right to pre-season.
Might be a fun idea. I can do a bunch. We have to invite stackers who support teams to do the one's about their own teams.
We could even aggregate info on team's offseasons online if we don't know much about them.
I am sure @Undisciplined would love to talk for days about his Raiders.

My advice is you both divide teams according to your likings. That'd make it more fun. Everyone likes both of you pulling each other's leg in comments.

Yes, I've been planning on doing a Raiders post, similar to this one. We have a bit more uncertainty to clear up than the 49ers, though.

You have your future DC in house: the one and only Brandon Staley.
reply
Doesn't seem to be the direction they are going. i think they are keeping him around as plan B for DC or ST in case their other plans fall through.
