It is easy to mock the government of California. I would say it is a joke but its actually evil. The government of California has managed to lose population to other states even though the weather is amazing most of the year and its blessed with some of the most beautiful places on earth.
My word of warning is to look at your own back yards. California was once like most "conservative" states in the US. California is simply a few years ahead of most of the US. Instead of mocking CA look at the specific reasons why its went wrong and look at your own areas.
I've spent time in several states and I see their governments following the same path as California while their people think they are sooooo much better off. Its a trap.
It isn't just "the woke". It isn't just "the democrats". Its much more subtle.
Another note. California is a massive state and the vast majority of it is NOT like LA or San Fransisco politically. Democracy and cities lead to what you see in California. Hopefully people will learn that daddy government is an evil monster but I'm not very hopeful for that in my life time. I think things have to get much worse before that will happen.
Edit:
It is promising to see that some have rejected Harris in a national election(not saying voting is how you change it). Its a good signal for where people are. However, it isn't as massive of a shift as some would like to believe.
End public service announcement.

"...we can't have nine angry lesbians controlling everything that goes on in Malibu, the Palisades and Santa Monica."
reply
There are subtle things that California has done that might "sound nice" to the average person.
  • Like restricting how much insurance companies can charge... cough.
  • Insane restrictions on housing construction and construction in general
  • Stupid occupational licensing regulations
  • Stupid tax policy
  • Insane projects like the "high speed" rail project
  • Price controls on energy as well as massive government regulation of utilities (Fires, high prices, unreliability)
I could go on but almost all of these things are only matters of scale in other states. Its not that California is communist and your state is free. Its that California has a more large welfare and regulatory system and one party control. California is much more like many European democracies than China. Its not a bad place to live. It is expensive.
Most states I have spent time in are headed down the same path. A few seem to be shifting in a different direction but I'm not convinced it will stick. I hope I am wrong.

The country is getting increasingly polarized geographically. Until quite recently, I had the same view as you about CA just being ahead of the pack. Now, I do sense that much of the middle and south are actually going a different direction. Many states are passing interesting laws on gun rights, legal tender, school choice, etc.
They aren't going to go full Rothbard or anything, but I don't think they're going towards CA anymore.
reply
I agree to a point but there is far to much focus on the superficial surface issues.
reply
My concern is that the focus is being led largely by conservatives simply reacting to cultural progressive ideology instead of true reform.
The issues in California aren't new, they have just become impossible to ignore. Was recently in Dallas and it looks like a California city. Same issues.
reply
I'd say the changes happening in many states are not generally happening in their cities. That's a problem for another day.

If you visit rural California you will find the same sort of people you find in rural parts of most states... part of my point.
reply
I understand, but it's translating into changes to state level laws in other parts of the country.
reply
Perhaps these policies are not meant to be stupid, but rather meant to destroy the system that works well around the world. Once the old system is totally destroyed, a new system, more to THEIR liking will be emplaced. It seems to be happening on a world-wide basis for THEIR benefit.

I read a while back that California, back in the 50's, 60's, was a much more conservative, business friendly place. And that lots of business owners from Connecticut moved to California, specifically because of that.

Yep it has changed a lot since Hollywood.
reply
Hollywood was conservative at one time. I'm not sure how it went liberal, that was before my time
reply
It wasn't always like it is today.
reply
I lived in California when it was conservative. I, personally, think that the lefty/Marxist/socialist/communist/murderers, lead by Gramci have been marching through the institutions of the whole country with California being in the lead, itself. The worst of the march has been through the education systems. Now, each state is getting the newly (un)trained teachers that have been inculcated with this horrendous garbage. But it is hard to take the brainwashing out for drying.
reply
So you lived in California between the 60s and 80s?
reply
Yes, the early to mid 70’s. I lived out in the Mohave Desert. It was a great place to be during those times. I haven’t been back and don’t want to go back, either. I think the pendulum will swing back, once people get fed up enough.
reply
I think it will swing back. Not sure if I will live to see it though.
reply
I think it is coming sooner rather than later with all the fire problems brought on by the state. There will be a lot of riled up people on the streets from losing their homes to fire.
reply
Anger is warranted of course but don't kid yourself. They aren't switching sides.
reply
Why? Don’t they realize the state has set up the conditions for losing their homes? They will choose more of the same?
