  • Since the 1960s fertility was falling due to couples having less children
  • In the last few years the fertility rate keeps falling. Seems like nothing changed on the surface. But under the surface there is a very curious trend: we're seeing less couples in the first place
  • If that is the true cause now it is important because encouraging couples to have children might be the wrong approach altogether
I encourage everyone to read this article. There are a few interesting observations about that topic. E.g. there are some south Asian countries where marriage rates curiously are still high... why? The trend is also more pronounced in lower education social circles while total fertility is negatively correlated with household wealth and income. Another two puzzle pieces don't neatly fit together.
A few days ago I linked to a paper that examined the connection between having housing and having kids: #843781
So many puzzle pieces that don't fit together with this topic.
Homeownership has a lot to do with falling birth rates as well. If you are boomers sitting in a 5 bed 3 bath home on a 2.9% mortgage paying 1600 a month in Illinois, and want to downsize to a 2 bed 2 bath - you will pay much more to downsize in todays and last years market. Many people can't downsize that want to, and what is happening is young couples living in 1 bed 1 bath apartments can't move up in homes.
People in my age range have said to hell with it, i'm just not going to have kids because getting a home is so far out of reach for me - mine as well end the tree right here.

There should be a better way to stack knowledge and posts and combine this knowledge on SN.
Any idea how to do that @koob / @ek?

We have a related section under each post: #846284/related

Is there a way to customize this /related section for me when I post? Sometimes the algo seems off

We don't have a way to customize it yet. It uses the title and the first paragraph or so to find similar stories last time I checked. When a title is vague/ambiguous it definitely under performs. It could probably use a dev cycle of improvement.

But that's already good to know! So I can optimize my titles and first paragraph! Thanks for letting me know.

If you want posts about birthrates to be connected you are free to create a territory

I don't think there is enough demand for a territory to be honest.
Also was meaning to link @k00b 😅
