I came across this idea which is more like an analogy, but it makes a lot of sense!
Different ideological groups are always "converting" people to their cause by telling their narrative, which probably has a mix of truth and lie in it. The thing is, these people actually believe what they are saying even if they haven't really studied, debated, or put a lot of thought into it. So from that point of view they are being honest, they are just acting as a vector for the virus.
The more intelligent ones might come about their ideas, in this analogy the virus, from various circumstances. Some of the them were created out of luck, others were designed. The human mind has this ability of understanding what makes people tick, very few humans master it but the ones who do can rally armies behind them.
I'm sure you can think of ideologies and people doing exactly that, and I bet you support many ideologies too, as do I. We do that because we are human, I'm just afraid some people might do it with a hidden agenda.
This is not meant as FOMO, FUD, or whatever sentiment, it's just to provoke thought.
