Obviously, bootstrapping your own LN node is hard, but it is also fun, because you get to understand how all the parts fit together, and it's what I do.
But some people prefer apps like Strike, Phoenix, and others which you can download on your phone and open all the channels for you. Maybe because they don't have the budget of many hundredK's of sats required to open enough channels to be well-connected. Or maybe because it's just easier.
The analogy perfectly fits with setting up your own software (or hardware) wallet instead of leaving your coins on an exchange. But that's quite an unsettling comparison because of how often exchanges fail. So at any rate, post in the replies your preference!
Strike and Phoenix are two completely different things. Strike is a full custodial service which does KYC and you don't control your own keys while with Phoenix you have your own keys and full control over your funds.
With Strike you don't have to do channel management with Phoenix you have to.
You can also use ecash wallets with a trusted mint but this development is quite early so be aware there could be bugs. Obviously these are as well custodial but at least you get a better privacy than strike. You can learn more here: https://docs.cashu.space/

I do both, for convenience. And I even use Ecash (Fedi and Cashu), for the moment with small amounts to learn and practice, but in the future I'm sure I'll use it a lot and I'll be also running my own mints, but probably using other's, again for convenience.
