US-based 3D concrete printing firm ICON announced a project was underway to construct 100 3D concrete printed (3DCP) homes for the chronically homeless and unhoused in Texas, US.
The expansion space spans 127 acres and is expected to house around 1,800 formerly homeless persons once it’s two-phased scheme is complete. In total (in addition to the 100 3DCP homes from ICON and Lennar), MLF said the expansion will add 1,400 homes in total, which it believes will bring its footprint to 178 acres and 1,900 homes and supporting structures.
The 100 3DCP ICON and Lennar homes will be a mix of town homes and single-family residences ranging from 380 sq ft to 1,040 sq ft.
Yikes 1,040 square feet seems so small!
According to local media, the projected cost of the project is more than US$100 million.
An anticipated completion date for the project was not available.
Starting to think 3D printed homes are more hype than substance.

I also saw they printed a bridge a couple of years ago. I wasnt a fan of the finish, but the technology must have gotten better. At least they are takjng steps in the right direction, but l would think building complexes would house more people in less space.

Yeah but the cost has to come down. I still think it’s mostly economically infeasible just like AI at its current state

Right, the cost wil have to come down in order to make it a viable government project. I feel like projects like this could be acheived with cinderblock houes. Maybe for even less? These houses are not that large.

How do you cry in the corner if the house has no corners?
Also in the pictures are duplexes with essentially not even studio size.
