Well, I think in the earlier days someone asking if poetry was okay to post (as there was no one else putting down verse at the time.) I think the response was that being somewhat topically or thematically related to the core tenet of SN, anything is AOK.
When I come to SN, I don't imagine I would post something about my knitting skills or my pet fish that seems unsociable, but I guess they could be tied to the core tenet of the site. I don't see why anyone would want to post things that are antithetical to SN, like I'm going to have a meme coin, monero or whatever thematically related, sub.
Like a covenants sub would be useful because it is a real key area that is in debate.
But also like how the data is being used in transactions, but not seperate subs for the data itself. That's now just tangentially related. topics have a very clear central point and if it clearly is adjacent to ethics or tenets that 'the space' seem to agree on, the SN consensus, then what's left to say?
I don't see SN as a Reddit plus zaps. I see it more as what I imagine BitcoinTalk was, plus zaps and obviously more than that community-wise. Community is key for me, I don't interact all that much, but that's okay to still be within a comminity and spend time there.
What are some hard-core, non-negotiable norms that have worked well at SN
I don't know if there are any, but I feel at ease and have the liberty to, for example, curse. Which actually makes me feel the need to so much, much less than if I'm going to interact in a moderated environment. This is great.
I suppose by the same token if you had members of the community behaving with senseless ad-hominem, maybe that would need to stop with the sudo powers of the creators. Ranch rules? Better not to have any but if I visit someone's house and they ask me to take of my shoes..
I never head of the acronym until now, but obviously have experienced it, and it's a good point to raise. I would say SN is low on that scale but I'm not aware of all that much as I might.
Subs are good like sandboxing, so if there was a huge divide between people wanting/non wanting something, you can resolve in this way. I don't mind people chattering about shitcoins all day long, as long as I can put my headphones on.
One thing that sprang to mind when someone mentioned the style or format. I think there is a very serious threat of stiffling expression with too many rules. Especially related to humour, sarcasm and wit in particular. But also in just posting content generally. Like posting different kinds of language, code, ASCII art, whatever! I'd like to see that flourish (if that's what people like.)
This was such a pleasure to read, so thank you for taking the time to write such a well-thought-out reply that took me a trip down memory lane. It’s nice to know that despite all these changes, SN’s core remains rock solid xP
Funnily enough, I also feel the need to curse here, though normally I just type freaking because I’m a teacher n we are supposed to have propriety haha. It’s nice to know that you feel so liberated here that you choose not to exercise the option of cursing even though you could.
You remind me of how strict Reddit subs are. Post something out of character of the sub n you can get yourself permanently banned. I remember feeling shocked when I saw Stackers posting their referral links - with no one taking them to task! Such a free country haha
Again, thank you for your time

No worries. I like to put some thoughts to paper (screen) when I have my morning coffee.
Good luck with all your endeavours and maintaining propriety ;)
