Ok, i distinctly remember being like 10, looking at the character select menu on SF2 and thinking 'the graphics can't get much better than this'
but these days, with each console leap, we're not making crazy jumps forward. like the Witcher 3 on ps4 still looks fucking awesome. sure it might look a bit better on ps5, or max settings PC, but it's not a big jump like 8 to 16 bit.
ultimately, i don't think this is a big deal, i can happily plan 10-15-year-old games and pixel art ones too. but once you've achieved photorealistic graphics, what ios the next graphical frontier?
i just wonder if the next leaps will be happening in VR or some other medium.
what do you guys think?
I find snes pixel art still appealing, even now, but early ps1 etc graphics are so shit that I can't play enjoy them.
I think once all graphics are basically photorealistic, we won't have console generations anymore.
3d will be the place to push the boundaries

I think we've gone beyond peak graphics. Very few people remark on graphical improvements of games anymore, especially as a reason to give it high praise. Tons of games are coming out with lower end graphics and achieving mainstream success.

I think graffics will continue to get better until they are indistinguishable from reality. I'd assume we keep seeing innovation in VR, but I still think we're a ways away from it being practical for everyone.

once they're indistinguishable, will we still have the usual console generations? they're going to have to sell us something!

there still seems to be a long way to go with the actual physics of game engines. I remember Battlefield 4 on Xbox One made a huge deal of the destructible environments, but we still haven't seen (to my knowledge) any truly realistic, large scale, totally destructible environments.
maybe they'll start making consoles that can run multiple games at once for multiple users. instead of plugging it into your TV, maybe you plug the console into your network router and then it streams the video to your screen, and you could play on several devices at once?

BF4 was awesome!

I'm not even sure, but they would figure out something to sell us.
