What surprised me wasn't this rise to โ€˜normalโ€™ values, it was that the normal value was so low!

Americans rely heavily on debt for large portions of their lives, so sorting on wealth gives a very skewed picture of economic well-being. The same people, living the same lifestyles, will be at radically different points on this distribution throughout the course of their lives.
