What surprised me wasn't this rise to ‘normal’ values, it was that the normal value was so low!

Americans rely heavily on debt for large portions of their lives, so sorting on wealth gives a very skewed picture of economic well-being. The same people, living the same lifestyles, will be at radically different points on this distribution throughout the course of their lives.
