Chinese New Year arrived, showering its blessings upon my son. It is customary for married adults to give children ang baos (red packets) for good luck and prosperity. My son was lucky enough to receive a windfall.
In our household, we allow our son to spend part of his money on things he fancies. I think relishing the joy of spending is important: #746879.
Of course, my son already knew what he wanted. He had clamoured for a lion dance lego set (series number: 80104) last year, but I was too cheap to buy it for him. I bought for him a cheap substitute good from China instead. But it just wasn’t the same because that inferior good didn’t come with dancing lions!
This year, he was perfectly willing to splurge about 170k sats on the real thing. He’s still 5 and doesn’t quite know the value of money, so it isn’t surprising how he let go of it without hesitation lol.
The Lego set arrived at our house yesterday. Boy, was he ecstatic! He whooped with joy, waved his arms all over, and jumped up and down like springs had been attached to his feet. He dashed over to the kitchen sink to wash his hands. (Yes, the Tiger Mum inculcated this hygiene habit in him.)
After washing his hands, he immediately set to work on the Lego set. I remember lamenting once that I am not into Lego, so my energy is depleted whenever I have to figure out how to out these tiny pieces together.
Looks like my son has a higher kinesthetic intelligence than me. He assembled the lion dances largely on his own just by referring to the instructional manual. Before his shower and dinner. I might not have been able to accomplish that, I confess.
You can see his broad beam amidst the blurriness of the image. This is what unbridled joy feels like. Since he’s happy, I’m happy too.
