pull down to refresh

Chinese New Year arrived, showering its blessings upon my son. It is customary for married adults to give children ang baos (red packets) for good luck and prosperity. My son was lucky enough to receive a windfall.
In our household, we allow our son to spend part of his money on things he fancies. I think relishing the joy of spending is important: #746879.
Of course, my son already knew what he wanted. He had clamoured for a lion dance lego set (series number: 80104) last year, but I was too cheap to buy it for him. I bought for him a cheap substitute good from China instead. But it just wasn’t the same because that inferior good didn’t come with dancing lions!
This year, he was perfectly willing to splurge about 170k sats on the real thing. He’s still 5 and doesn’t quite know the value of money, so it isn’t surprising how he let go of it without hesitation lol.
The Lego set arrived at our house yesterday. Boy, was he ecstatic! He whooped with joy, waved his arms all over, and jumped up and down like springs had been attached to his feet. He dashed over to the kitchen sink to wash his hands. (Yes, the Tiger Mum inculcated this hygiene habit in him.)
After washing his hands, he immediately set to work on the Lego set. I remember lamenting once that I am not into Lego, so my energy is depleted whenever I have to figure out how to out these tiny pieces together.
Looks like my son has a higher kinesthetic intelligence than me. He assembled the lion dances largely on his own just by referring to the instructional manual. Before his shower and dinner. I might not have been able to accomplish that, I confess.
You can see his broad beam amidst the blurriness of the image. This is what unbridled joy feels like. Since he’s happy, I’m happy too.

I guess the joy is worth much more than 170k sats. After all why you earn money for?

Awesome. Legos are a great life building skill! My son just got a Lego EV3 programming block

This sounds really advanced! Does it incorporate robotics?

That looks like a nice Lego set.
I buy so many legos but I'm too afraid to let my kids play with them coz they'll break it and lose the parts
I'm like the villain in the Lego Movie

Lego this day seems tailored to a particular theme. Gone are the days where we used generic blocks to build something that we conjured out of our imagination!

Nothing wrong spending a little money on something fun. Especially something like Lego that helps him learn skills.
reply
Indeed. I learnt never to underestimate kids. They can achieve things I can’t haha

Its funny how he seems to like it more than you. My family was big into legos when I was a kid, but my son doesnt seem to have the patience for it. He did like the small blocks that connect and make different things, though. I actually wasnt a fan of those because they were so small and could be swallowed. Be careful your daughter doesnt find some pieces under the table!

What are things that you and your son enjoy doing together?
Thank you for the warning.

Playing jenga. He is surprisingly good at it.

Good to have something to instil focus, especially in this attention-seeking world

Actually, since you are in singapore, you can probably get the diy candy kits. Especially the ones making gummy or jello, the kids really enjoy those. Afterwards, they can eat them, but it is delayed. Its a good way for them to learn patience.

Your son likes animals a lot it would seem 😁
reply
He really does. I have learnt so much about animals, thanks to him

It seems like he picks them as toys often.
