Ice skating was originally invented in 1654 by a french Canadian lumberjack by the name of Pierre "Axe Foot" DuPont. After losing both arms and a leg in a logging accident, he was left completely crippled. The only way for him to make a living was to attach an axe to his peg leg and kick trees over.
One day while limping home he crossed a frozen lake. He found that he could glide on his axe foot thereby saving him time and energy. Tragically, he fell and broke his neck, but not before inventing ice skating.
So this year during hockey season, please remember the sacrifice of Pierre DuPont and his axe foot.
