Yeah... typical how a good thing gets blown out and distorted. Adam Curry popularized the V4V term but has always said the value is determined not by the creator but the receiver.
The whole "you owe me" thing is super common in Open Source as well. Dude, you opened sourced code. I don't owe you anything. That's not how the world works.

It's probably my fault for not looking into it more, I tend be very charitable with how I interpret things, which often gets me in trouble or makes me look dumb.
