pull down to refresh

So, apparently, I forgot to link the actual episode in the post yesterday (#892470); fair enough, it was late over here and I made an error. Whatevs, RBD.
Anyway, the episode itself was off to an awkward start... it was clear that Joe didn't feel super comfortable around Magnus, and the latter isn't the easiest interview target in the world: Carlsen talks, and likes to talk, but you gotta get him started and that took a while.
What I really loved so far is around the 20-30-minute mark when they talk about true excellency and how it emerges (nature vs nurture, luck or genetics etc).
They talk about obsession and how discipline alone isn't enough to get you somewhere, but a true enjoyment and obsession about the topic/field/game itself is necessary.
And then Joe remarks on chess as an obsession, and says something like...

"chess is an obsession that GETS IN YOUR BONES"

My god does that resonate with me. At times, that green lil app eats me up (#853488). It's so rewarding, and so addictive, and so reflecting of your state of mind elsewhere; It's like
  • see what's going on
  • spot the patterns and opportunities
  • make the right moves (on time)
= excel.
It's just life on 64 objective squares. Pay attention, calculate accurately, see the bigger picture, don't make mistakes.
Fucking wonderful.
Anyway, I'm enjoying this episode a lot, and I just popped in to tell y'alls
Peace /J

Haven't had a chance to listen to the JRE podcast (hard to commit to such a long podcast) but I really enjoyed Magnus' interview on the In Good Company podcast:
