While still supportive of a capitalist economy, it stresses the importance of government intervention in order to improve human and environmental conditions.
Isn't that just the original meaning of Progressive? Is that what makes it conservative? They're conserving the original meaning of "Progressive".

I don't think progressives are very pro capitalism.
The Progressive Conservatives are neither very progressive or conservative.

The original Progressive Movement in America was largely about advancing major industrial interests, like railroads and such, as well as seeking state remedies for everyday problems.
