I think the biggest loser is going to be Europe because they will get sucked into the mess

Putin cares mainly about:
no NATO membership for Ukraine
Crimea stays in Russia
Donbas is independent

The current blow up puts weird pressure on Putin.  If he continues to attack it makes it look like either (a) he and Trump are secretly ganging up on zelensky (which Trump would hate) and/or (b) that he is disrespecting Trump and destroying Trump's peace promise which hurts him politically.
