I'm getting the impression that Trump was merely aware of the deal, which he heartily blessed, but that it was underway already.

"forced" seems a little much... strong-armed or bullied or influenced etc.
It was a strange throw-away line in the FT article, without explanation: well, ms. Journalist, how do you know that was the case, then? SAYS WHO?!
