This is stupid. Here, forest defenders are also defenders of the current president. That's why we're only seeing the international media making this criticism.
I'm not sure I understand. Can you explain further? Does the president support the highway and the climate summit?

When you look at who was running in the last Brazil Presidential race Jair Bolsonaro had a ton of support in "developing" the Amazon. He lifted a ton of restriction and let the ag sector slash and burn a lot of areas.
Silva ran on protecting the environment and not being a far right person lol. According to the article from the BBC I posted just a few minutes ago (sorry it wasnt flagged for similarities I have asked K00b about that!) the project had been around since 2012 but environmental concerns kept shelving it.
Brazil is likely going to fall into the same mistake they made with both the Olympics and the World Cup... build a lot of stuff that is only used for a couple weeks and then it falls into disrepair/disarray. I mean they are building out the airport to handle 14 million passengers a year when it currently only has 2.7 million passengers a year.

Exactly. That’s why I said we know them well. Countless overpriced projects with suspicious companies involved. Projects stuck in planning for years until an unnecessary event happens and suddenly we “need” them urgently. “How convenient” should be Brazil’s motto.

It sadly seems to be a thing for every country when it comes to big events like the Olympics, World Cup, etc. I know that the LA Summer Olympics only got support from the city/state because they are putting up temporary buildings for some of the events and upgrading others instead of rebuilding or building whole new complexes.

The current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has the support of the media, the artistic class, NGOs and the entire state apparatus that claims to protect environmental causes. In the previous government, which was led by a political opponent, any and all actions that harmed the environment were harshly criticized, sometimes fairly and sometimes unfairly. In the current government, we have already broken a record for forest fires, and attacks on the environment continue, but the criticism that was once effusive is now nonexistent.
Yes, the president is actively supporting COP30 The state government says that the project is old and that it is not suitable for COP30. But we know our politicians very well and we know that projects here do not happen so quickly, much less for the benefit of the population.
