It's a good strategy to get some more attention. It's about cognitive dissonance. You can see a lot of thumbnails doing this nowadays (the ones with a simple black background, one person on one side and then some white text  next to the person with red background for one word)

for shorts you could try Opus Clips. you can upload clips from there straight to your YT channel, but you can also manually edit the clips to make them better.
as for the thumbnails, go for something simple, nothing distracting, and the text you write on the thumbnail should be something that seems contrary to the topic you talk about and to your audience.
