This post feels more like sour grapes than an honest critique. Like he never mentions Nostr Wallet Connect! He’s viewing everything from social media lense. With growth expectations of current social media sites/platforms.
Also monetizing protocols are extremely hard. SN is trying to monetize on LN so far Sveski might call this site a failure because it hasn’t captured the growth/network effect of Reddit or hacker news when these platforms been operating for decades.
I understand his frustration but I think this piece is misguided coming off a failed venture. When it was first announced made no sense to me after burning cash on a idea that died its only natural to write something like this.

The more I observe Nostr, the more I think it was a mistake to make Twitter clones the first services to launch.
It's an identity and messaging protocol, but positioning as a competitor to a social network which was always a distant third was foolish.
At heart, it competes with some combination of FIDO/Passkeys/PGP/RSS/Discord/Signal... a super messy milkshake with a ton of potential for someone who can figure out the mix.

NWC is such a little piece of nostr, it’s not relevant when talking about nostr in general imo.
NWC also has its own issues like no negotiation of permissions between app and wallet.
Nostr is immature (especially regarding key management) but is it really because we’re early?

Moving from nsec.app to Amber gave me a much better experience in key/identity management. Felt like a 10x improvement really. Need those kind of leaps.

To this day haven't tried Primal, aside from a quick burner account about a year ago, because it still doesn't support Amber sign in.

You mean discussing the social media application of nostr sure I agree but nostr overall.
All protocols have issues TCP/IP, Bitcoin. Pick one you can find tons of unsolved issues
I agree the key management is terrible. But maybe it gets better in the years to come. It’s pretty amazing it’s gotten this far. The biggest driver of development resources came from Jack Dorsey and that was only $5M bucks

Sorry to be so uber pessimistic. At what point would it better to just give up and build on top of a another more successful protocol instead? 🙈

Are you currently in possession of one of these unpopular opinions?

I'm more in favor of idealism, and less pragmatic, than the author. Although, if I felt like the protocol is ossified (beyond the margins) and the majority of devs/influencers are irrational and have perverse incentives, I would probably share his pragmatism because I couldn't fix the roots of the unpopular opinions. In general though, I think his account of nostr is very sober, and while unpopular, it isn't that negative and his opinions are things people in-the-know aren't willing to say out loud.
Of all the four opinions he listed, one can't be chalked up to "just being early." I too think poorly assigned (especially perpetual) grants come with a price. It's crazy how many would-be founders I've met that are like "I'll just get a grant." AFAICT they mostly want grants because they are low commitment and the expectations are low. They'll then seek VC once they've been denied a grant as if they should be thought of interchangeably.

I also didn't find it to be particularly negative. I hope the big nostr believers are right about it, but it's not a big deal if they aren't. Like the author said, trying something else if nostr fails is a very realistic option.
