is there like a recommended setup for a node with vpn?

I feel like all guides always target Tor and simultaneously people complain all the time about force closed channels. Why is that?

I guess I understand that tor is more ideologically aligned with the spirit of Bitcoin. But aren't people sick of it at some point?
