I met an author, Michael Kingswood, whom I was excited to find out was a science fiction author local to me and playing my favorite game--Texas Holdem-- no less. I was even more excited to see he accepted bitcoin on his website:
Unfortunately I was immediately disappointed to see it was WooCommerce plugin that required a ton of KYC. After seeing so many cool products roll through SN perhaps my expectations were too high. I'm saturated here with newer and cooler ways to commerce in a self custodial manner. This wasn't it.
I asked him if this bitcoin would be sent to a wallet he controls he said no. WooCommerce, or someone, custodies it, and he has to request withdrawals. Blech. I told him I wasn't sure exactly what he needed but there are way better ways to accept bitcoin in a more self custodial fashion. He quickly told me he would love something like that and would ultimately like more exposure to bitcoin but he was worried about one thing: He doesn't want to lose his automated setup.
Currently, When someone buys a book, the WooCommerce plugin works with another plug in, BookFunnel, that sets the book up for delivery via Ebook or paper backs. All hands off, and pretty cool, I thought. He really doesn't want to lose this automation and is open to ideas. I mentioned I was positive there was a good fit for him but I just didn't know what was out there that might accomplish accepting bitcoin in a custodial fashion and also holding onto the automation he has now.
I made sure to let him know I wasn't sure what the answer was but I know a great place to look. So here I am looking!
