Self hosted is kind of nice and fits with self hosted services.

IMHO, that would be confusing. If you run software on your phone that holds your keys, you're not hosting someting. Something remotely can't access it. It's not like it's content, hosted for other people/devices to access.

Good point!

I wouldn't say that I self-host in my house.

I live in a house. I reside in a house. A private house.

So my wallet is where my keys reside.

My wallet is the house for my keys.

Are my keys then self-housed?

Doesn't roll off the tongue, ... and does not make this all really any clearer. But just putting that out there.

I would instead call all the other ones "accounts".

"hosted" vs "unhosted" is a false dichotomy, don't let this narrative push you in the corner to start with...

Think about newspeak. This is a war. The words we use matter because make no mistake -- the legacy system is choosing their words carefully.

Off the top of my head...

"real bitcoin wallet" vs "paper bitcoin wallet"

reply

I miss the paper wallets. I wish those would have caught on.

reply

In this case I mean "paper" as in paper-like bitcoin.

"Hosted wallets" are just an IOU from an unregistered, unregulated and uninsured bitcoin bank.

The private wallet is bad because it's not (necessarily) private at all. The word "private" (vs "public") is completely bastardized anyway.
