With the internet money that bitcoin is, and more games than ever being on the internet.
Just like robux and fortnite bucks and COD Points and FIFA Points.
Does Bitcoin need to be within these games, does that future exist?
Thanks for your time, look forward to your replies.
I think such future would be great. But currently, most/all the implementations of games that include LN micropayments follow the hypercasual game approach where they bombard you with ads as that is their monetization model.
It'd be nice to find another model that does not require ads. And that would allow to focus on actual gameplay rather than gamification tricks to have you keep coming back play stupid games.
I think Thundr (see #451194 if you don't know who they are) has a goal to evolve into that kind of game, but I haven't checked in on them in a long while.

Yeah those hypercasual games... hmm
I played on ZBD and Thundr games a while back. Have they changed much?
Thing is ads in games that are free, are a sad norm.
[ Just to clarify, I was specifically talking about the big games and cost money, and then people still spend money in them.
Having the payment not be coins or whatever and be actual bitcoin/sats. ]

Not sure if they've evolved. I think at some point there were talks about a tool that would allow one to incorporate LN in Counter-Strike, but not sure where that ended up going.
I think one possibly meaningful way to add it in a real game is where part of the original "purchase" price gets pooled in a large pool where people compete for these sats. The problem with real money is that people will game it.
Well, they kinda already do with the CS skins, etc, so maybe that's the way to go.
Ok, I'm rambling, not fully focused... waiting for my python script to make me a nice interpolated colormap, but it's taking too long with more than 10 million entries in the original data...

I was just thinking about making a post in ~gaming about this.
There is some really interesting monetization potential and different business models for game developers in doing so.
What I was thinking about was an RPG where the purchase price of the game is the total amount of currency in the game world. Upon beating the game you can withdraw whatever amount you've earned back.

That's a very interesting idea. Seems a bit weird to me, but it's an idea none the less.
Yeah, having bitcoin/lightning means that games can have biiig and small purchase points.
So for example a DLC with say one quest could be 1 sat, but a full storyline could be 100 sats, with new items and all that stuff.
I think it will only take one game dev to do this to really see the potential.
The fact that bitcoin/lightning is on the phones, things like being on console isn't an issue, just need a QR code and mobile data.

The idea came to me while I was thinking about how to fix the common problem of your character becoming stupidly rich way to easily.
The solution I was thinking about was to impose real scarcity in the game, in terms of stuff mostly, but it dawned on me that there’s no need for a separate scarce in-game money when we already have scarce digital money.

I agree. I'm currently playing modded fallout 4 and have the bottlecap perk x2 and I just loot the caps from the storage and now, lvl ~30 I have like 4K caps.

It should.
I think most gamers aren't thinking of making a living off it though. A sh$tcoin is easier for game developers as it doesn't cost them much and they can produce as much as they like. Using sats could be costly if the game doesn't have much of a user base.

I'd be MORE willing to pay/buy "skins" for a game, if I could later sell them, if I wanted.
And if that value was in sats/btc.

i would like to see a world of warcraft based on sats economy. Now with open servers maybe is possible https://firestorm-servers.com/ on these servers users can buy items with some fs credits but they do not accept btc
on the other side... i do not think is really necesary to be real sats inside a game. Look at SN. Is practically like a game: you pay to play (post) and the simple way is to "buy" cowboy credits with sats.

OrangeMarts Rust's implement of bitcoin is awesome. When I last checked it, it was QR codes on the boards. And someone with the ingame vending machines.
I agree that every game/service that handles money should handle it a way that is approprate to them, financially or otherwise.

It's always been a fun idea if you want to see Bitcoin succeed, i.e. you're a holder. I'd love to play a game and get paid at the same time. Winning the game and stacking hard. Maybe it'll work if it's the kind of thing where players help build assets or do marketing!

Yes, just like being paid for YouTube and Twitch for streaming what you love. I do think being able to game specifically and earn a living would be cool.
The first thing that comes to mind is MMO's are very much suited to this, but most of them have a "You cannot sell or buy accounts/characters externally and if you do you're banned".
I understand why that's their but for example. If someone spent their life playing an MMO and their son wanted to sell their stuff to be able to keep living, that should be totally doable.
