We got dollar wrench attacked two nights ago they ended up stealing some fairly useless stuff from all our cars 3 but didn’t come into our house.
Stealing meds , phone chargers, my drill and a small amount of cash.
Got us thinking what we need to do to keep us safe.
Home security what do you do or what suggestions are a good start?

Shooting a robber and going to jail is not really a win lol
reply
so the option is to let the robber to shoot you... right. The thugs are just LOL reading this.
reply
Usually in places where guns are disabled the third option is robber robs you and gets away. As a specific American band would sing "Sad but true".
reply
Not only guns you can 3D print...
reply
Its always nice to pull a knife in a gun fight ;)
Very rare for anyone to have any kind of gun here . The thieves had knives
reply
Do you believe that petty-theft is a shootable offense?
There must be a line between a starving child stealing bread and an armed vault heist. Where is the line where it becomes okay to start blasting?
reply
Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Its always a good idea to live
reply
As I said unfortunately the thing that happens is that robbers rob you and don't kill you. So you are not carried by anyone because you are alive.
Of course I see the value in posturing that you are irrational and will kill the robbers regardless of consequences since if they believe you they won't rob you.
Yeah, unfortunately the nash equilibrium is exactly what happens (even in gun happy USA) - people are robbed and that's it.
reply
Oh they just rob and don't kill? Okay, I just don't give them my stuff them. They'll get bored eventually and leave right?
reply
Correct. The robbers had knives

Get an intimidating dog, like a Rottweiler, and keep them with you at all times.
reply
What about when your sleeping have the dogs on patrol outside or keep them inside?

Mine likes to sleep in the living room where he can keep an eye on everything. If anyone tried to come into the house he would bark like crazy. The main point is to be a deterrent. If someone tried to get in they would know there's a protective dog waiting for them. Would it stop someone very determined? Possibly not, but I would have plenty of advance warning.
reply
Yes exactly I like that our dog was inside and didn’t hear them going through the cars but she is a bit of a sook. But looks tough haha

I'm sorry, but I think that to protect your home and your family ... knowing how to handle a weapon and possess one, it could mean a big difference to when you don't have it and the situation requires it.
reply
I agree but in Australia you’re not allowed to have them unless you have a farm or meet some strict requirements
They robbers had knives apparently
reply
How did they get in?
We were robbed a while back, similar in that the robbers just got into the garage but didn't enter the home.
Here's how they got into the garage. There was one car out in the driveway, normally locked but for some reason not locked that night. The bad guys were out there, checking cars in driveways to see if they were open, and then pressing garage door openers that they found inside the cars.
Then they opened the garage, and stole whatever they found (a nice bike, a few other items).
reply
Same issue we happened to leave cars unlocked so was easy pickings for them! They didn’t bother by the looks try to come in the house.
They hit the complete street and surrounded streets armed with knives just taking what they could carry easily
reply
After the above robbery at our place, we changed the setup - garage door opener no longer a simple button in the car, instead with a keypad on the side of the house.
reply
Ah yes nice move!
reply
What are you allowed to use for personal defense? Big knife? Boomerang?
My approach has been to move to a safer neighborhood, which is obviously more costly.
reply
I feel our issue is we are staying at the in-laws while our house is built and they are in a rural town not to far from a not so good town so that isn’t helping.
We mainly use trained native animals like drop bears and crocodiles
reply
So, you forgot to fill your car with crocodiles one night and this is what happened?
reply
Correct Easter weekend I let the crocs have the night off and look what happens the rats come out

I came to post this until I read to the end... Iono our HOA has a contract with the constables office

yeah its about 100k a year but the crime reports month to month are regularly 0 (not counting "domestic disturbances") i think our dues are like 500 and include that and trash pickup not much more
reply
Yeah why not is that a gated community type set up?

No we are the 2nd largest self run HOA in Texas no management company and can't levy fees. I think its 2.6k homes over a few streets no gates. We rent the upstairs of the fund office to the cops for 1$ a year so there is a large presence around us as its a hub for other HOA contracts in the area

That’s very interesting. I haven’t heard of anywhere doing something like that here but I’ll look into it
Here are some ideas:
  • Cameras and an alarm system.
  • If you want something way cheaper, just print a good size sticker with a Security Company logo and put it in your door.
  • Invest in a good and safe lock for your doors. The goal is to have a better lock than your neighbors.
  • Get a dog.
  • On the front door, put a good ligh activate by movement sensor.
  • Do not store your hardware wallets and the seeds in your house.
reply
Like all this and will do them when our new house is built!
reply
i see a few options:
  • move to a quieter neighborhood, further away from the big cities.
  • get better connected with ur neighbors - start a neighborhood watch.
  • get a big dog; make sure to entrain core obedience.
  • install cages around ur windows and doors. install double doors.
  • do not leave anything that looks valuable in plain sight, visible thru windows of the house or the car.
  • fake cameras (cheaper) that are motion activated and speak "hey, u are being recorded for ur own safety..."

Great suggestions I’ll take them in my house build plans

Better do the shooting than get shot
reply
Yes but I would end up in jail if I did that
reply
It's better you get to court and tell the judge It was an act of self defence than have your corpse carried to the mortuary.
I rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Think about it.
reply
Yes I know what you’re saying but I’m not a killer. And I would be in trouble as I shouldn’t have a firearm in this country without a very hard to get permit
