How Much of Us Is Water?
About 60% to 70% of the human adult body is water by weight.
Babies have even more—around 75% water.
Water is found inside cells (intracellular fluid), outside cells (extracellular fluid), in blood, and in all bodily fluids.
Why Are We So Much Water?
Water is essential for life: It’s the medium where almost all biochemical reactions happen.
It transports nutrients and oxygen to cells and removes waste.
It regulates body temperature through sweating and respiration.
It lubricates joints and cushions organs.
But We’re More Than Just Water
Our bodies also contain proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and nucleic acids—all built from atoms arranged in complex molecules.
These molecules give us structure, function, and identity beyond just being “water.”
Fun Thought
If you removed all the water from your body, what’s left would be mostly carbon-based molecules—the building blocks of life like proteins and DNA.
