No is not hard to maintain an email server if is properly setup. If you setup correctly the SPF, DKIM and DMARC and PTR you have nothing to worry. I will never use a hosted email server and domain for my private/business stuff.
Nowadays you can install practically an email server in 5-10 min (if you know networking) even on windows. If you don't know how an email system works, indeed is hard to configure it like anything else. IDK why email servers installations are not in the schools courses curriculum.

Ok but it is harder than it was. I didn't need a course before. I did the DMARC and DKIM. At least I keep trying. Everyone else I know personally just use external services and in the same way, not self custodial wallets. It is a bit similar situation I guess.

I found that hosting your own email is only worth it if you are able to encrypt your content with other person, like Edward Snowden did.
But as it's a hard thing to ask people to manage their PGP GPG key pair, finally there is a good way to encrypt and secure your emails: https://delta.chat/
It took me some months to look more deeply into DeltaChat. Tell me what is your take on it.
