Let's have some Friday fun.
I'll go first.
For some strange reason my wife believes when you turn on the air conditioning in the house you should open the windows for awhile to "blow the hot air out".
She is a perfectly logical person but for some reason she can't get passed what I assume is an old wives tale.
Whatcha got?

For some reason my wife thinks I spend too much time on Stacker News.

Now that's just silly.

My wife believes in jinx's. It's extremely frustrating.
reply
Does she do anything specific to avoid said jinxes?
reply

Yes, the tried and true method of knocking on wood wards of even the most powerful jinx. 🙄
reply
At least she isn't trying to ward off vampires.

Similar to @siggy47, my wife thinks I talk about bitcoin to much :)

In her defense... I do talk about it a lot and I try to not run it in the ground. I wonder if I'm doing better about it. She's sold on bitcoin btw.

just throwing mine out to change the cadence here lol My husband believes no restaurant is worth going to if it’s busy …will he read this??
reply
Busy meaning you have to wait a long time for a table or just busy in general where there are a lot of people and maybe it is loud?
reply
Also, depending on the temperature outside and which windows you open, your wife's right about the AC thing.
reply
Stop the madness. If it is cooler outside and there is enough air flow coming into the house why would I have the AC on? I would just cool the house with outside air. If I want to cool it faster I suppose having the windows open while the AC is on could make that happen slightly faster. That's debatable. But it is certainly not blowing the hot air out. It's called air "conditioning" for a reason.
reply
I'm thinking about a video I saw explaining why you don't save much by turning off the AC while you're out during the day. And, the explanation was that it's so expensive to cool all that air down, you may as well have just kept it cool the whole time.
You might be in a situation where it's warmer outside than you want to make it inside, but it's cooler in part of the outside than the adjacent part of the inside: like maybe the north side of the upstairs. So, if you open those windows while the AC starts, the warm air will flow out of your house more efficiently than the AC unaided.
reply
i think this only holds true if it was a small space and the AC vent is pointed directly towards the window. I still think it is unlikely as vents in a forced air system merely allow air that is being blown through the ducts by the blower to escape into the room and circulate with the existing air. If there is a breeze from outside the outside air would be entering the room at a rate quicker than the inside air is exiting. If there is no breeze, it is a small space and the vent is pointing directly towards a window I suppose it could aid in some warm air being pushed out.
If the room had an individual air conditioning unit and not central air it seems more plausible.
reply
Convection is orders of magnitude more efficient than other forms of heat transfer, though, so even if you can only generate a little exchange, that'll offset a decent amount of AC.
Maybe we're quibbling about what "blowing out" the heat means, but I maintain that this can be a worthwhile thing to do.

AI disagrees with you but there is a heated debate on physics stack exchange about it that doesn't seem to reach consensus other than to never open your windows when it is warmer outside than inside which is likely the case most of the time in the summer when you would be running your AC.

Whoa, I believe the same thing as your wife! Especially if the air outside is cooler than the air inside
reply
If the air outside is cooler you can just open a window and let the cool air in. If the air is warmer you are just letting in hot air and making your AC work harder.
I suppose there is some happy medium where the air outside is cooler but there isn't much airflow/breeze so it would take a very long time to cool the house with the windows open.
reply
That process is faster if you turn the AC on
reply
Ok but if the house isn't cooling quickly enough via open windows and you need AC then it stands to reason that AC will cool the house just as quickly on its own and you don't need the windows open to assist but if it is cooler outside then it wouldn't hurt the process but I still don't think you are blowing the hot air out as my wife claims.

I'll be brief...my wife thinks crypto investments (including Bitcoin) are stupid.

What does she think you should invest in?

His biggest problem is that he doesn't believe in digital things, only in tangible ones. Therefore, he thinks that real estate is the best investment right now. That's what it will be (we want to move to a bigger house), but there's still a "little" money missing...I hope to have the missing part of "many stupid digital investments" by the end of this year :)

My wife wants her handbags always filled up with fiat notes, and too much gold jewellery. And she has both, but she wants more!!
reply
The gold isn't so bad but the fiat? She needs to convert that to bitcoin. If she likes shiny things get her a gold plated hardware wallet.
reply
I think she love to spend fiat at occassions like marriages and birthdays of others and fiat makes her look richer. The same is true about jwellery. The gold platted wallet idea is good but she won't like it for she can't wear it.
Spending/throwing fiat like nuts on others marriage and birthdays is a status symbol in India.
reply
At least you are giving to others. In Western cultures people only spend on themselves to look rich.
reply
Yea, sometimes I too can feel proud on things like this done by her. Recently she went to her uncle who is just a small farmer. She gave 500rs ($6) to everyone before returning back. All good except there were like 25 girls and boys in her uncle's extended family!
Everybody asked her to visit them sooner again.

When we left the house we cannot return if we have forgotten something 🤷‍♂️

Really? Is it bad luck?
reply

Yes, and sometimes it gets really annoying when we have forgotten something important
reply
Wait, did it first happen the time she forgot her mother in law at home?~~
reply
Just normal stuff, i.e. voting matters.
A common refrain of hers is "Everything is bullshit", so excessive belief in things isn't much of an issue for her.
reply
That's a lot of bullshit. Haha
reply
As far as first approximations go, you could do worse.
reply
Well, we know one thing that is bullshit and that is Colin Cowherd's takes.

That should be between you and your wife... lol
