What would you propose as a better course of action?

For starters, core devs could not have tried to take away configuration options, and could not have attacked people who were unhappy about that. I'd like to see a well maintained alternative to "core".
Like I said, this isn't about technical details any more. My views on bitcoin, individuals in the project, and their motivations, have changed.
