@Undisciplined makes this comment on the pod when they were discussing the Michael Porter Jr. brother’s betting scandal.
I think this is a massive fallacy that normal sports fans believe. For us sure it sounds cool to sit on the bench but for those guys they want to play. Professional athletes have massive egos plus the more they play the more they earn. Sitting the bench in high school sucked so I can’t imagine making millions makes it feel better. Guys want to play and compete. The money is nice and for some that’s all they care about (looking at you JaMarcus Russell) but this idea it’s a dream job is ridiculous. They still have to attend all the meetings do all the workouts know the playbook only to sit and watch.
They want to be in the action period.
I suppose it depends on who's making the claim. I'm sure you're right that it's not a dream job for most of the people who have it. Although, even there, the point is that they get to have a lucrative career in football, with accruing debilitating injuries, rather than selling insurance (or whatever their outside options are).
The point is that it would be a dream job for the vast majority of sports fans, which is who I'm repping. To be a millionaire playing football, working out, and watching football all day: sign me up!
reply
Would it? Most sports fans are outta shape. No one likes doing a bunch of work only to sit and watch. Plus you risk getting cut if you aren’t prepared. It’s still a job
reply
You only sit and watch the game (from closer to the action than any fan gets to be). The rest of the week, you get to participate.
Plus you risk getting cut if you aren’t prepared.
Now you're getting to the part I have no rebuttal for. None of us are competent to be backup QB's, and since that would be extremely obvious we'd lose the job very quickly.
reply
Plus people want to maximize their earning potential. Everyone on the planet is trying to increase their income. Why be happy sitting the bench making $12M a year where you can start and make $20M
reply
Well, to that I'd point out that literally only 32 people on Earth are starting QB's, so it's not necessarily rationale to think that's in your career choice set.
Also, your assertion is only really true for men. Women make lots of work-life tradeoffs, whereas men just earn as much as they can until they die.
reply
I think you are right. I think he more meant it would be a dream job for the average person.
reply
But would it? You do all that prep just for the chance that you might play in an actual game. Even your average Joe will want action at some point
reply
You prep to be ready! It’s like being in the national guard.
reply
But that’s war! Haha PUT ME IN THE GAME COACH I CAN MAKE A PLAY!

Normally, ego is always greater than money (at least in the case of professional, competitive athletes). That's why I also think that "benching" in any league for a PRO athlete (not for someone who is money-hungry) is not a dream job, but rather a suffering.
