Hmmm... I knew Eric doesn't like the idea of a mempool.
Is that what makes a faster IBD?

He basically approaches it on first-principles and doesn't try to copy concepts that Core has.
They have a different architecture that optimizes for (greedy, with 100 outgoing download peers by default) parallel IBD (much less mutex locking, non-serial validation of blocks.)
Last time i tried testing the current development work was when the whole assumeutxo drama went on but it didn't fully validate everything yet back then, so I have to do another run to validate Eric's claims; I'm confident that there's truth to his metrics though. I'm personally interested to see stable operation more than a one-time IBD and find out what the tradeoffs are.
