This is a thread for random discussions that gets posted everyday at 5am central.

Tell us what you're doing today, ask questions, or vent about your life. Whatever you want, let it rip!

What if someone were to put a comment in my profile page that is disparaging, or for whatever reason I don't want that there. Is there (planned) the ability to moderate our own profile pages?

reply

Nothing planned yet, but it's also not much of a problem yet. Always happy to change my mind.

I've got a suggestion.

The notifications are great, letting me know when there is a comment reply to read.
But the notifications that I received sats, ... not something I need to be notified about. When I was new on SN, ... that was really awesome to see that my posts or comments received a tip. But over time, ... not something I still want to be disturbed by with a notification.

So, maybe add another option in my Settings where I can mark which events will cause the "notifications" indicator to turn on:

Settings -> Notifications:

Great idea! 💡

Does anyone else use the visual feedback shown, after giving a tip, as a method to indicate what you've already read?

It actually works pretty well as a time-saver. If the row has the yellow lightning symbol, I can scan right past it. Just like the read/unread indicator in my e-mail client.

I used to do this "upvote/downvote to indicate what has been read" trick on Reddit too.

But it is nice to be able to glance at the front page, or recents, and know the quantity of posts I have not seen yet, and then easily go through them.

reply

I do. Hadn’t thought too consciously about it though

After the Tweet embed for posts, what about a youtube embed, or other video player embed method?

The workaround is to post a Tweet that has the youtube link, and Twitter takes care of the youtube embed, but why involve Twitter when I'm just trying to share a youtube link (or mp4 from some web host)?

reply

Definitely! I'll add a gh issue

Had to share this personal win somewhere… Little known fact that @k00b and I have been working on a medical software project together. We integrated a jobs board to help monetize our traffic and after SIX(!) months we finally got our first taste of “passive income” 😂 from an organic job listing:

Here's the image embedded. I'd create native support for imgur if we weren't going to roll our own media stuff.

To be fair, we did have some income from ads before.

But having someone pay directly on the site is really nice.

lol context: I built that job board almost a year ago to the date.

reply

yes! it’s our first “sale” form of passive income!

thanks for the direct image embed couldn’t figure out how to extract that from my phone
