So Breez does its best to open channels for you, but if a path can not be found then they complete the transaction for a fee.
And logically your first deposit into the wallet will require a fee since the node you are running has no channels open yet.
And all of this happens in a non-custodial manner?

Breez opens a channel if you don't have enough inbound liquidity. Yes, it's non-custodial.
